The Draft in the Civil War

A 5 page outline of the history of the draft or conscription in the American Civil War. Concludes that the effectiveness of the draft declined in both the North and the South as the war raged on. This was due to different factors. The South simply didn’t have the manpower to continue to supply draft requirements and the poor Northerners began to rebel against the draft because it targeted them more so than the wealthy and because they began to understand the full socio-economic implications of emancipation. Grant's Civil War Strategy
